Learn about how to repair buildings with lime mortar. Understand how traditionally built stone walls work. Learn how to assess and prevent damp in stone walls.
Lime mortar is at the heart of Scotland’s traditional building stock and this introduction will bring together best practice and analysis.
Acheninver Hostel is a 200 year old traditional West Coast Croft house with 3ft thick walls and no damp course. We will assess the Hostel building, suggesting points where water ingress might be taking place and offering solutions. You will learn about combinations of traditional and new materials that can be used in repair and how to quantify them for a job.
This course will equip you to assess a traditional building and make informed choices about restoration. This is primarily a theory course with practical survey training.
For further instruction in practical skills there will be some places availabile to participate in the restoration of Acheninver Hostel in Autumn 2017.
This course is funded by Coigach and Assynt Living Landscapes; Coastal Communities Fund and Acheninver Hostel.
